Vancouver Mahjong champion advances to international tournament. On Sunday July 27, 2008, Jim Kwong of Vancouver was pronounced the champion of the second annual Mahjong Charity Open at the River Rock Casino Resort, in support of the Richmond Firefighters Society.

Kwong, a veteran player of more than 30 years, took home the grand prize - a seat at the World Series of Mahjong tournament in Macau and air fare and accommodations for two at the Wynn Macau (valued at more than $10,000). Kwong will be taking his wife with him as he advances into the international games for good luck and support.

“I saw the advertisement for this event and entered in support of the charity but never thought I’d win the top prize,” said Kwong, after six hours of play and defeating 255 other players. “I’m excited to go to Macau but nervous at the same time because I haven’t played in so long!”

Presented by River Rock Casino and Resort and sponsored by British Columbia Lottery Corporation, the tournament raised $5120 for the Richmond Firefighters Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and serving the Richmond community.

“The Richmond Firefighters Society is very thankful and excited to have been selected as the recipient of this donation,” said Cory Parker from the Richmond Firefighters Society. “We are a non-profit organization and donations like this will allow us to continue helping a variety of charities in the community.”

Mahjong tournament back by popular demand

River Rock Casino Resort is pleased to present the second annual Mahjong Charity Open on Sunday, July 27, 2008. Players will get a chance to compete for the top prize: a seat to play in the World Series of Mahjong tournament at The Wynn Macau in September, plus flight and accommodations. The total value of prizes to be won is over $20,000 for the top 16 players in the tournament!

The entry fee is only $20 per player. Players will also get a chance to win cash prizes throughout the tournament, try their luck at the casino, and enjoy a great selection of food from the many dining options available.

Best of all, the entry fees will donated to the Richmond Firefighters Society, a volunteer society dedicated to supporting and serving the community. Bring your friends and come out for a fun day of Mahjong and support a great cause!
