In 1975, Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met on their first day of rehearsals for Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney, Australia and became instant friends. After each show’s performance, they would play pizza parlours, coffeehouses and night clubs with just one guitar and two voices. They quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was continually writing. They then made a demo tape and took it to every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down except for CBS Records who admired their unique style. They recorded a single in one afternoon and it shot to #1 on the national charts. Air Supply was born! That same year, they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then throughout the US and Canada.
Back in Australia, they released Life Support in 1979. Soon after the album made the Top Ten, it somehow found its way to record producer Clive Davis in New York. Clive immediately signed them to Arista Records and in 1980, “Lost in Love” became the fastest-selling single in the world leaping to the top of all the charts. Their second single, “All Out of Love” went up the charts even faster followed by their third single, “Every Woman in the World”. The albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever and The Greatest Hits sold in excess of twenty million copies. The trademark sound of Russell’s soaring tenor voice and Graham’s simple yet majestic songs created a unique sound that would forever be known as “the Air Supply sound”. Today the duo continues to tour worldwide and will be performing for one night only at the River Rock Casino Resort on March 7, 2014.
