Lily Tomlin, one of North America’s foremost comediennes, continues to venture across an ever-widening range of media starring in television, theatre, motion pictures, animation and video. Throughout her extraordinary career, she has received numerous awards including six Emmys and two Tonys. Tomlin who was born in Detroit, Michigan claims she wasn’t funny as a child but admits she “knew who she was and lifted all their material right off the TV screen.” Her favourites included Lucille Ball and Imogene Coca. After enrolling at Wayne State University to study medicine, she left in 1965 and moved to New York where she built a strong following with her appearances at such landmark clubs as The Improvisation, Café Au Go Go and Upstairs at the Downstairs. It was in 1966 when Tomlin made her television debut on CBS’s "The Garry Moore Show” followed by several appearances on “The Merv Griffin Show” which led to a move to California where she appeared on ABC’s “The Music Scene” in 1969. She was then signed to NBC’s top-rated “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” and immediately rose to national prominence with her recurring characters “Ernestine,” the irascible telephone operator and “Edith Ann,” the devilish six-year old. After the show left the airwaves in 1973, she went on to co-write with Jane Wagner starring in six comedy television specials between 1973 and 1982 for which she won three Emmy Awards. Tomlin’s film appearances include Robert Altman’s Nashville (1975), Robert Benton’s The Late Show (1977) and Colin Higgins’ comedy, 9 to 5 opposite Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton (1980). She also appeared as part of an ensemble cast in Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog (1992) and portrayed “Miss Jane Hathaway” in the screen adaptation of the popular television series, The Beverly Hillbillies (1993). Her Broadway credits include Appearing Nitely (1977) and The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (1985). In 2002, Tomlin joined the cast of NBC’s “The West Wing” where she played President Bartlett’s assistant, “Debbie Fiderer” through to the final episode in 2006. Currently she can be seen on ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” playing the role of Mrs. McCluskey’s sister, “Roberta.” Tomlin will be bringing her stand-up show to the River Rock Casino Resort for one night in January, 2009.
