For four decades, The Beach Boys, originally comprised of the three Wilson brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love and neighbor Al Jardine, made music that became North America’s soundtrack to summer. Inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and recipients of the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, The Beach Boys are an American institution that is iconic around the world. The group began singing about the newest craze, surfing, in 1961. What followed was a wave of hits that expressed lives, dreams and ambitions with generations of North Americans. Their sound, full of sun-drenched harmonies and golden melodies brought the world optimism and a taste of California wherever the band’s music was played. After Brian retired from touring in 1965, Bruce Johnston then joined the band. Their many hits include “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfin’ USA,” “Surfer Girl,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,“ “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” “Do You Wanna Dance?,” “California Girls”, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” and “Good Vibrations.” And of course there’s 1988’s “Kokomo” which was their first #1 hit in twenty-two years and was featured on the soundtrack of Tom Cruise’s film, Cocktail. In June, Capitol/EMI will release the first complete collection of The Beach Boys’ early Capitol Records singles spanning the years 1962 to 1965. The Beach Boys: U.S. Singles Collection – The Capitol Years will be released in a highly-collectible limited edition boxed set of sixteen CDs and as a digital collection. As well, Love and Johnston will be touring throughout North America this summer and into the fall hoping that their music will continue to bring smiles and laughter for years to come. As Johnston says, “Our music will always let you know that summer means fun … forever!”
